The public is welcome to visit the Refuge year-round. The Visitor Center is open daily from 8:00am to 4:30pm; admission to the exhibits is free.

The type of access (i.e., foot, automobile, snowmobile) permitted varies seasonally. Road conditions can sometimes change rapidly, either from seasonal weather transitions or flooding. Please be alert at all times for road hazards while traveling on the Refuge. The forty miles of gravel roads accommodate passenger vehicles and are open generally between Memorial Day and mid-December. During the winter, the roads are not plowed, but a network of groomed trails, managed by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) is available for properly registered snowmobiles (VAST TMA required). The Refuge is closed to all vehicular access during Mud Season, which is the time period immediately after snowmobile season has ended. During this time, the Refuge is still accessible by foot. Call the Visitor Contact Station at (802)962-5240 or toll-free at (877)811 5222 for the current status of the roads. Bicycles are allowed on gravel roads, but not on trails. Horses and ATVs are not allowed.
